John E. Julian, 74, of Havelock, died Monday, September 7, 2009, at Britthaven of Havelock.
Mr. Julian was a veteran of nearly 30 years in the USMC, who served as a drill instructor at Camp Pendleton, CA, received a combat commission to 2nd Lieutenant during the VietNam conflict and later achieved the rank of captain, served as station adjutant at New River Air Station, Jacksonville, NC, and ultimately, retired as Sgt. Major at VMA-231 at Cherry Point, NC. He subsequently also retired from civil service at Motor Transport at Cherry Point. Julian also served as a member of the Havelock Fire and Rescue Squad from 1975 to 1985, having been Havelock Fire Chief from 1980 to 1982.
A memorial service will be held 1:00 pm Tuesday at Chery Point United Methodist Church with Pastor Joe Stallings officiating.
Julian was pre-deceased by his wife of more than 50 years, Audrey. He is survived by two sons, John Andrew Julian of Middleburg, FL and Phillip Chartel Julian of San Francisco, CA; sisters, Roberta Kaumeyer and husband Jack of Charlotte and Judy Julian of Lancaster, OH; brother, Michael S. Julian (with whom he served concurrently in VietNam) and wife Pam of Amanda, OH and granddaughter, Haley Iman Julian.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Project Compassion, a ministry to U.S. veterans returning from combat, in care of Cherry Point United Methodist Church, 107 East Sherwood Dr., Havelock, NC, 28532.
