Virginia Watson Pollard of Newport ascended to her heavenly home on the morning of Wednesday, February 29th. She will be joyously reunited with her great love and late husband GC Pollard, Jr.
A funeral service will be held 2:00 pm Sunday at St. James UMC with the Rev. Susan Lindblade officiating. Internment to follow at Gethsemane Memorial Cemetery.
Mr. and Mrs. Pollard were wed in an unprecedented, truly original ceremony 2,000 feet over Craven County- a first for the town, and the first plane ride ever for the bride. They were married 67 years in 2007 when Mr. Pollard passed.
She was a dedicated member of St. James UMC and helped to establish the St. James UMC Thrift Store, which continues to benefit the community today. She was a selfless, giving individual, involved in numerous volunteer activities including Helpline, the Matthew 25 Fund, and Meals on Wheels. She was also an active member of United Methodist Women and the Business and Professional Women's Association. She was an exemplany person-A wonderful wife, devoted mother, and an extraordinary grandmama. You could always count on her for a positive word of encouragement and unconditional acceptance.
In addition to being a pillar of the community, she was also the heartbeat of her close-knit family. She is survived by her two loving daughters, Marti Cannon and husband Alton, and Ginger Odom and sister Fannie Morton. She also leaves a legacy for four grandchildren, six great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters Lucille and Janie and her brother, WJ, and her grandson Jeffrey.
At her very tallest, she stood all of four foot, eleven inches- and to quote her "the best things come in the smallest packages". Diamonds and dynamite.
Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 pm Saturday at Munden Funeral Home.
