William "Bill" Herbert Styron, Jr.

William “Bill” Herbert Styron, Jr., 84, of Cedar Island, passed away at his home on the afternoon of March 22, 2018.

His memorial service will begin with visitation at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 25, 2018 at the Atlantic United Methodist Church, followed by the message at 3:00 p.m. Pastor Manley B. Rose, Jr. and Pastor Jack Colenda will officiate.

Mr. Styron was born in the Morehead City Hospital on December 12th, 1933.  He graduated from Atlantic High School.  He later attended Louisburg College from 1952–1954 before being drafted into the US Army during the Korean War. 30 days after returning home from his time in the Army, Mr. Styron joined the US Coast Guard where he proudly served for 20 years. After retiring from the Coast Guard, he returned to Cedar Island where he worked as a commercial fisherman. In the later years of his life Mr. Styron worked with the NC Ferry Division for 6 years, Waste Management for 10 years, and performed the most important job on Cedar Island as the driver of the mosquito repellent truck.

On September 23, 1954, he was married to Veda Styron of Atlantic. Together they raised four children and traveled all over the country throughout the 1960’s and 70’s. Mr. Styron was a member of Shriners International. He also earned his pilot license in 1952 and enjoyed flying throughout his life. Mr. Styron was a devoted Christian for the past 15 years who loved and served the Lord with all his heart. He was a member of the Refuge Fellowship Church on Harkers Island for the past 2 ½ years.

In his own words, Mr. Styron “enjoyed his work and always tried to do his work to the best of his ability. He enjoyed watching the wild ducks and geese he fed come and go. He loved his church, congregation, and family.”

He is survived by his wife, of 63 years, Veda Mae Styron; children, Denise Daniels and husband, Bobby, of Cedar Island, Penny Smith and husband Mark of Atlantic, and Allen Styron and wife, Hollie, of Cedar Island; grandchildren, Jodie Daniels and partner, Christina Tosto, Mark Daniels and wife, Martha, Freddi Smith, Alex Smith, and Karmin Styron; sister, Linda Goodwin of Cedar Island and her children, Amy and Chris; great-grandchildren, Broghan Handl, Mark Daniels, Jr., and Mae Bella Daniels; as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Kathleen Styron, and his eldest son, William Mark Styron.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Carteret County Hospice at 3500 Arendell St., Morehead City, NC 28577 or the American Cancer Society at P.O. Box 22478 Oklahoma City, OK 73123.
