William Herbert Holz, 73, "Bill" to his many friends, of Cape Carteret, died February 16, 2018 at the Crystal Coast Hospice House.
A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 22, 2018 at Swansboro United Methodist Church.
Born in Louisville, Kentucky on August 15, 1944, to Salvation Army officers Ernest Waldemar Holz and Emma Wilhelmina Krunsberg, he was named in honor of two uncles fighting in World War II, one shot down and a prisoner of war in Germany, and the other in a hospital after surviving an attack in his tank. As his parents were assigned to different posts in the United States, Bill and his siblings lived in various states. At the time of their retirement, they were Commissioners serving as National Commanders of The Salvation Army, USA. Bill graduated with a BS from Asbury University in Wilmore, Kentucky, before accepting a commission in the US Marine Corps during the Vietnam conflict. He flew over 400 combat missions as a RIO in an F4 Phantom squadron before returning to Cherry Point, and later MCALF Bogue, where he met and courted his wife of 45 years, Ruth Paxon McLean. They lived in Cape Carteret, where they had two children, Elizabeth Britton Holz and William McLean Holz. Bill was a faithful member of Swansboro United Methodist Church, where he served as a member and the Chairman of Finance and Trustees committees and sang for many years in the chancel choir. His early training as a Salvation Army musician stood him in good stead, as he continued his playing as a trumpeter, accompanying the choir for special services. He was often joined by fellow trumpeter and son Mac Holz. He loved golf and built Golfin' Dolphin Family Entertainment Center in Cape Carteret, where he enjoyed many a cigar. He was a valued member of the Star Hill Golf Club Board of Directors, and played golf whenever and wherever he could, with his pals Larry, Mick, and others rounding out their foursomes.
He is survived by his wife, Paxon, and his children, Elizabeth and Mac Holz, of Cape Carteret; his sister, Lt. Col Mary Jones and husband Lt. Col Tom Jones, Salvation Army (Ret.) of Clearwater, Florida; his brother, Ernest R. Holz and wife Linda of Arlington, Virginia; and sister, Christine H. Goodier and husband Bob of Osprey, Florida; nieces, Ellen Jones of Bowie, Maryland, Natalie Jones of Atlanta, Georgia, Leslie McLean Bragg of Huntersville, North Carolina; and nephews David Jones of Hoschton, Georgia, and John Paxon McLean, Jr. of Cape Carteret, North Carolina; great nephews and a great niece.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
