Morehead City

William D. "Bill" VanHorn, 67, of Morehead City, North Carolina, passed away on Thursday, January 4, 2024, at the Crystal Coast Hospice House.

A funeral service to honor Bill’s life will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, January 9th at Munden Funeral Home, officiated by Rev. Dennis Goodwin.  The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., Monday, January 8th also at Munden Funeral Home.

Bill was born on April 9, 1956, to the late Harry and Ethel VanHorn. He was a lifelong resident of Morehead City but always remembered his family roots and often visited the old homestead in Cedar Island.

Bill had many talents, working as a long-haul trucker and a commercial fisherman. Whatever he did, Bill took great pride in his work and found joy in the freedom of the open road and waters. His determination and dedication were evident in everything he did.

Outside of work, Bill had a zest for life that was contagious. He loved to gather with friends and family hosting backyard gatherings, which often included oyster roasts and meals prepared on the grill. Bill's skills in smoking food were renowned, and his dishes were always a meal to look forward to.

An avid lover of the outdoors, Bill loved to go scalloping, clamming and boating. He was at his best when he was relaxing on the water. His boat was his happy place, where he could relax and enjoy the beauty of the Crystal Coast. Bill’s other interests included motorcycles, music, traveling, and NASCAR. He loved his Harley and long rides. He always had his favorite tunes playing and enjoyed cheering on his drivers during NASCAR races. Bill also had a taste for adventure and enjoyed traveling and exploring new places.

Bill was a kind, loving, generous man whose loyalty and love knew no bounds. His kindness was seen through the countless times that he would find ways to help people who needed assistance. Above all, Bill adored his family, and he selflessly cared for his mother before she passed away. He was a devoted son and a pillar of support for his loved ones.

He is survived by his partner, Sue Dingess of Morehead City; his brother, Edward VanHorn of Chicago; and Chris Lewis of Morehead City, whom Bill loved like a son.
