William "Billy" Slater

William “Billy” Slater, 55, of Newport, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, March 21, 2025.

A celebration of Billy’s life will be held from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 27th at Jack’s on the Waterfront in Morehead City, NC.

Billy was born on October 16, 1969, in Portsmouth, Virginia. Skilled in mechanics, he pursued that passion and had a long career working independently as a mechanic. He was always fascinated with cars and spent many hours building his own race car to compete in.

In his free time, Billy loved being on the water, fishing and being on his boat. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Always social, throughout his life he had many groups of friends that stuck with him through the years.

Billy will be remembered as a loving son, supportive father and proud grandfather, whose presence will be deeply missed.

Those remaining to cherish his memory are his daughter, Cortney Leggett (Jeffrey) of Wake Forest, NC; son, Sam Slater of Newport, NC; parents, William and Peggy Slater of Virginia Beach, VA; sister, Susan Pitcher (Chandler) of Virginia Beach, VA; grandchildren, Brayden Leggett, Dylan Leggett, and Lillian Leggett; and close family friend, Angel Adams.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
