William, known by all as Mike, was born on September 10, 1954, in Sea Level, North Carolina, to the late William Bell and Emma “Frankie” Guthrie. Growing up along the Carolina coast, Mike developed an unwavering love for the water. He embarked on a career centered around his passion, starting as a deckhand on the R/V Dan Moore, and ultimately rising to the skilled position of Captain on the Carolina Coast with the Marine Fisheries. Mike's dedication and expertise were apparent to all, making him an admired and respected figure in his field. Mike was the captain of several charter boats, including Kokonutz and Peggy, in which they placed in numerous fishing tournaments. Mike also enjoyed speckled trout fishing.
Beyond his love for the sea, Mike enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. Sundays were his cherished relaxation days. His favorite sports team was the Tar Heels and he proudly cheered them on. He found happiness in spending quality time with his family, especially his precious grandchildren, whose laughter brought joy to his heart.
Mike's culinary skills were unmatched, and he took great pleasure in cooking delicious meals. Whether he was setting up camp under the stars or embarking on exciting journeys, Mike embraced the sense of adventure that life had to offer, leaving a legacy of unforgettable memories along the way.
Mike is survived by his devoted wife, Sara Lee (Sug), who stood by his side through every triumph and challenge. Along with his daughter, Sarah Guthrie Rivenbark of Straits; son, Brandon Guthrie (Gena) of Wilmington; stepdaughters, Brooke Kenworthy (Lance) of Wilmington and Monica Smith (Thomas) of Beaufort; sister, Cynthia LeRoy (Danny) of Kernersville; grandchildren, Memphis, Cameron, Isla, Luca, and Connor; and nephews, Kris, Matthew and Josh.
