William D. "Billy" Guthrie, Sr., 71, of Bogue, died Thursday, July 14, 2011 at his residence.
Services will be held 4:00 pm Sunday at the White Oak Church of God with Rev. Richard Franklin, Rev. Keith Russell and Rev. Dewayne Dickerson officiating. Interment will follow at the Bethlehem United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Mr. Guthrie was the owner and lead producer of Guthrie Farm Produce and the co-owner of the Center Tobacco Warehouse. He loved labrador retrievers. He served in the U. S. Coast Guard Reserve and was a charter member of the White Oak Church of God where he faithfully taught a Mens Bible Study and Sunday School Class. He served on the Board of Directors of the West Carteret Water Corporation and the Western Carteret Fire and EMS. He was president of the Bogue Sound Watermelon Association, past president of the NC Tobacco Growers Association, and a conservative candidate for the NC Commissioner of Agriculture in the late 90's. He served as a Bogue Town Councilman since Bogue's incorporation.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Sherry Guthrie of the home; daughter, Tajuana Guthrie Hill and husband, Scotty of Bogue; son, William Douglas "Doug" Guthrie, Jr. and wife, Kim, also of Bogue; eight grandchildren, Brittany Hadden of Cape Carteret, William Justin Guthrie of Bogue, Ashelyn Ramsey of Peletier, Corey Kaznowski, Hailey Adamski, and Brooke Adamski, all of Bogue, Bryanna Hill of Bassett, VA, and Monica Hill of Martinsville, VA; great-granddaughter, Ema Lee Hadden; sister, Shirley Guthrie Page and husband, Herbert of Bogue; and mother, Lola G. Guthrie.
He was preceded in death by his father, William Elijah Guthrie and son, Patrick Ryan Guthrie.
The family will receive friends 2:30 to 4:00 pm Sunday prior to the service at the church and other times at the home.
