William Frances "Soupy" Campbell, Jr., CWO4 (Ret), 81, of Newport, died Saturday, March 26, 2011 at Crystal Bluffs Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.
A Funeral Mass will be held 10:00 am Wednesday at Annunciation Catholic Church with Father Greg Spencer presiding.
Mr. Campbell was born May 11, 1929 in Dorchester, MA and enlisted in the US Marine Corps on May 12, 1947. He was a decorated veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars and retired in November 1977 after 30 years of service in the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing at Cherry Point and abroad.
He was a member of the Newport Moose Lodge 2194 achieving the Pilgrim Degree of Merit, a member of the Aviation Logistics Marines Association, a retired member of the Newport Fire Department, a former member of the Fleet Reserve Association of Havelock and former Commissioner of the Town of Newport.
Soupy was the loving father of Lt Col William F. Campbell, III (USMC, Ret.) and wife, Debbie of Dallas, TX, Geraldine C. Hirasawa of Morehead City, Robert E. Campbell of Newport, Michael J. Campbell (Chief of Police, Ret.) and wife, Cathy of Havelock, Joseph A. Campbell and wife, Cathy of Newport, and Paul S. Campbell and wife, Jodi of Morehead City; cherished grandfather of of ten, Justin, Jennifer, Adam, Kristen, Ryan, Jonathan, Megan, Ashley, Chelsea, and Kelly; and great-grandfather of two, Ben and Olivia, with others due in May, September, and October. He is also survived by his brother, Robert J. Campbell of Braintree, MA; sister, Ann Mulloy of Stoughton, MA, and a multitude of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Geraldine Marie Campbell, father, William F. Campbell; mother, Alice Campbell; and sister, Alice Glinski, all of Boston, MA; and brother, Albert Campbell of FL.
The family will receive friends 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm Tuesday at Munden Funeral Home.
