William “Bill” Hayes Jones, 81, of Newport, passed away on Friday, December 27, 2024, at Crystal Coast Hospice House.
A graveside service to honor Bill’s life will be held at 11a.m., Friday, January 3 at Gethsemane Memorial Park, officiated by Pastor Donald Thomas.
Bill was born on April 9, 1943, in Burlington, North Carolina, to the late Joseph and Evelyn Jones. He proudly served our country in the United States Marine Corps for over 23 years, showing his dedication and honor. Known for his sharp shooting skills, he set a world record in skeet shooting, hitting an incredible 548 out of 550 targets - a feat that earned him a place in the Armed Forces Hall of Fame.
Bill shared 58 wonderful years with his wife Shirley and was a devoted father to his children. He loved the great outdoors and enjoyed hunting and wildlife. Bill was a huge fan of classic westerns, John Wayne and Gunsmoke were among his favorites. He leaves behind a legacy of honor, strength, and love that will be sorely missed.
Those remaining to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 58 years, Shirley of the home; son, Kenneth Hayes Jones of Newport, N.C.; and sister, Barbara Boggs of Haw River, N.C.
In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his brother Robert L. Jones.
