With great sorrow, we announce that Wade Talley Swain, born on August 22, 2006, in Cary, North Carolina, passed away on August 3, 2024, at the age of 17. Wade was a remarkable individual known for his leadership qualities and his readiness to assist others.
While his parents both grew up in Carteret County, Wade lived his entire life in Johnston County, beginning his schooling at Cooper Elementary and continuing at Smithfield-Selma High School in the International Baccalaureate program. He notably served as the school’s first ever Captain of the Spartan’s baseball team, demonstrating his passion and dedication to the sport. His leadership on the field was a testament to his character, influencing many. He was soon to begin his studies at Wingate University in pursuit of a career in Physical Therapy.
He leaves behind a loving family that includes his mother, Susan Talley Swain; father, Gary Swain Jr.; brother, Dylan Swain; maternal grandmother, Judy Talley; paternal grandparents, Kay and Gary Swain Sr.; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins who will forever cherish his memory.
A casual gathering will be held for family and friends to honor Wade's life and legacy at 116 White Oak Bluff Road in Stella NC on Saturday, August 10, 2024, at 2 p.m., and then a celebration of life will be held at the Smithfield-Selma High School baseball field on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, at 4 p.m. for those in Johnston County. Anyone attending is asked to wear their SSS Spartan Gear.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions may be made to a dedicated fund supporting the Smithfield-Selma High School baseball team and field, reflecting Wade's enduring love for baseball and his community. Donations can be made through: Wade Swain Memorial Funds (Baseball Donations)
