Dwayne was born on August 2, 1956, in Morehead City, North Carolina, to the late Victor Salter and Shirley “Shady” Salter Willis. Known as a dedicated father, son, and brother, he was committed to the Lord, his family, and his church.
He began his musical journey 57 years ago at the age of 8, alongside his father, playing piano in the church. Dwayne could be seen and heard every Sunday behind the ivory keys up until the last week of his life when the Lord called him home. He loved music, singing, and playing those keys for the Lord. Dwayne could often be found on his piano bench, blessing others with his anointed music.
In the summer, when he wasn’t on the piano keys, he could be found on his hands and knees in the water at the sound, clamming and playing with his kids and grandkids. Dwayne had a passion for his family and loved family gatherings, he was famous for the “best microwaved baked ham” as he was the cook in the family.
He is survived by his loving children, Megan Salter of New Bern, Michael Salter of Newport, Samantha Ratliff and husband Matt of Morehead City, and Whitney Atwood and husband Scott of New Bern; brother, Bill Salter and wife Carolyn of Winston Salem; and grandchildren, Kevin Young Jr., Victoria Young Sanders, Emmalee Salter, Weston Atwood, Makayla Atwood, Gracelynn Ratliff, Lillian Ratliff, Madeline Ratliff, and Dylan Ratliff.
With nicknames for all four of his children and grands, he never called them by their names. It was always by nickname and was made it known to all: Megan “Pooh”, Michael “Boogie”, Whitney “Sugarfoot” and Sam “Kooter”.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Esther L. Salter.
As an expression of sympathy, plants are welcome or memorial cards may be sent to the Salter Family at 906 Meadows St., New Bern, NC 28560, or donations may be made to Salter Path United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 70, Atlantic Beach, NC 28511.
