Vernon Jake Schrum, 94, of Pine Knoll Shores, passed away on Thursday, September 22, 2022, at Wake Med in Raleigh.
His memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m., Friday, October 7th, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Raleigh, followed by a luncheon.
Vernon was born on October 21, 1927, in Lincolnton, North Carolina, to the late Hiram and Maude Schrum. Commitment, strength, and honor were defining characteristics reflected in his brave service to our country. Serving in the Merchant Marines during World War II and the United States Army during the Korean Conflict, Vernon’s sacrifice and valor were commendable. With his military service, he was proud to be a member of the NC Chapter of the American Legion. Vernon also served on the Carteret County Social Service Board, helping to improve the quality of life for others.
He is survived by his loving wife, Nancy K. Schrum; sons, Louis Atwood Schrum and wife Cheryl of Pine Knoll Shores and Bradford Kiser Schrum of Raleigh; brother, Wayne Schrum; and grandchildren, Jacob Schrum, Nick Schrum, and Noah Schrum.
In addition to his parents, Vernon was preceded in death by his brothers, Nelson Schrum, Harold Schrum, and Garmon Schrum.
