Velma Adams Stewart, 86, of Broad Creek, passed away Monday, April 25, 2016 at Carteret Health Care.

Her funeral service will be held 3:00 pm Thursday, April 28, 2016 at White Oak Church of God with Rev. Richard Franklin and Rev. DeWayne Dickerson officiating. Interment will follow at Gethsemane Memorial Park.

Velma was a charter member of White Oak Church of God, and sang in the church choir. In the 1940’s she sang in a Gospel Trio with her brother and sister in Beaufort that was played on the AM Radio Station. She retired from civil service and was a seamstress. She was the widow of MGySgt, John Robert Stewart, Jr., USMC who was a three war veteran, serving in World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War.

She is survived by three daughters, Donna C. Mizelle and husband Charles D. of Broad Creek, Sherry C. Guthrie of Bogue, and Elaine C. Underwood and husband Kevin of Broad Creek; three     sons, Robert C. Stewart and wife Barbara,Daniel N. Clark and wife Gina, and John R. Stewart III and wife Becky all of Broad Creek; brother, Otis L. Adams of Broad Creek; sister, Faye Adams Willis of Newport; 12 grandchildren, Carla Marshall, Doug Guthrie, Tajuana G. Hill, Rodney C. Stewart, Melanie A. Simmons, Danielle Sanders, Elizabeth Hodges, Austin Clark, Matthew C. Stewart, Tabitha Nixon, Kevin Underwood, Jr. and Kristin Underwood Furr; 20 great-grandchildren, Brittany G. Haden, Justin Guthrie, Hailey Adamski, Brooke Adamski, Cory Kaznowski, Ashelyn G. Ramsey, Bryanna Hill, Monica Hill, Asher Nixon, Selah Nixon, Alyssa Underwood, Piper Underwood, Berlyn Underwood, Lorelei Underwood, Elias Sanders, Cole Hodges, Tristan Stewart, Kailynn Simmons, Bailey Simmons, and Jordan Stewart; and two great-great-grandchildren, Ema Haden, and Fiona Haden.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, James Leslie and Jessie Dixon Adams; sister, Gloria A. Mann; and son-in-law, William D. Guthrie.

The family will receive friends 1:30 – 2:45 pm prior to the service at White Oak Church of God.
