Troy Dixon Henry, Jr. “Dick Henry”, 80, of Newport, North Carolina, passed away Saturday, November 25, 2023, at his home.
A memorial service to honor Dick’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 9th at All Saints Anglican Church at 292 McCabe Rd, Newport, NC, officiated by Rev. David Linka.
Dick was born on December 10, 1942, in Portsmouth, Virginia to the late Troy and Evelyn Henry. Growing up in Selma, NC he would be found at the family hardware store, Henry’s Hardware, or the local pool hall racking balls for tips. He often earned a little extra from those that challenged him in a game. Dick enjoyed fast cars too, moving from country roads to the straight track with the debut of the Mighty Mouse. Later, Dick would win multiple NHRA Championships and held speed records in his division. He also loved dogs, raising Dobermans as show dogs for a time.
In the mid 60’s, Dick began making fishing rigs and lures to sell at the family’s hardware store. Soon, he purchased a van and made the trip from Selma to the coast to sell his rigs store-to-store. This is where many people came to recognize him and his drive, passion, and motivation. Dick became a distributor of other fishing brands and founded Henry’s Tackle Company in Morehead City, changing the face of the industry. Sea Striker was developed to operate the manufacturing part of the business as they acquired interest in other fishing tackle brands such as Gotcha Lures, Clarkspoon, Star Rods, Angler’s Choice, Nungessor, and Penn Fishing Tackle. Dick had a passion for helping others who sought his guidance in business. He enjoyed helping others achieve, being a role model for many through his beliefs about customer service.
Dick was one who worked hard, but also took time to relax. Enjoying travel, some would say he was happiest when he had a plane ticket in hand. When he was in town, Dick could often be found enjoying friends and family at Shackleford Banks. Brauts and hamburgers on the grill always taste better there.
Those remaining to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Susie Wang Henry of Newport; brother-in-law, Yong Wang; mother of his children, Phyllis C. Henry of Morehead City; and sons, Troy D. Henry III (Donna) of Wake Forest, NC and Phillip E. Henry (Shannon) of Newport, NC. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Stephen, Aaron, Justin, Laurel, Liam, Kian, and Kiley Henry.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to American Sportfishing Associations, Coastal Conservation Association of North Carolina, 3HC Home Health & Hospice Care, St Jude’s Children's Hospital, or Wounded Warrior Project.
