Thomas Stewart, 85, of Newport, died Sunday, November 13, 2011 at his home.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday at Newport Baptist Church with Rev. Gary Carroll officiating. Interment will follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery.
Mr. Stewart served his country in the U.S. Army, worked with the U.S. Postal Service, and was a member of Newport Baptist Church. Prior to moving to Newport, Mr. Stewart resided in Garner,NC and attended Garner First Baptist Church. He loved serving others and was passionate about teaching the young men in the church about Christ's love. Mr. Stewart enjoyed yard work and gardening.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ina Stewart of the home; daughter, Becky Stewart of Newport; son, Wesley Stewart and wife Judy of Alpharetta, GA; granddaughter, Jessica Stewart of Alpharetta, GA; sister, Louise Lominac and husband Harold of Williamsburg, VA; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Elliot and Leafy Stewart, two brothers, Elliot Stewart and James Stewart, and a sister, Evelyn Everette.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
The family would like to say a special thank you to Carteret Home Care and Hospice. A deep appreciation is also extended to those who served as caretakers the past year.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Carteret Home Health Care and Hospice, 3500 Arendell St., Morehead City, NC 28557.
