Beaufort

Thomas Shelton Roach, 71, of Beaufort, NC, passed away early Wednesday, January 29, 2025. Memories of Tom, better known as "Little Roach," will remain in the hearts and minds of everyone who knew him.

Born on September 18, 1953, in Statesville, NC to the late Elmina “Sis” Shelton Roach and Jackson Thomas Roach, he moved with his family to Carteret County in 1968. After leaving West Carteret High School and working at the Kop Shop for several years, Tom eventually started his own business framing houses. Most will remember seeing his pickup truck with his iconic logo "Surf's Down Builders. " His motto was "When the surf is down, we'll be around!" He loved to surf anytime, anywhere; even jumping off the end of the pier during hurricane swells if the need arose.

Tom also volunteered as an MC for the Buddy Pelletier Surfing Competition for many years, where his grand personality, iconic wit, and sense of humor really shined.

Photography was one of his creative passions, and he enjoyed capturing pictures of good surf and beautiful landscapes. He was also known for cruising on his motorcycle and his love of dogs.

Tom's surviving family are his sister. Sandy Roach Elliott and Chuck of Beaufort, NC; brothers, Jack Roach and Meredith of Belton, TS, and Bill Roach and Amy of Morehead City, NC; and numerous nephews and nieces, Shelly, Young, Blair, Gay, Shelton, and Ty.

If anyone would like to make a donation in memory of Tom, he was an avid supporter of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Go to stjude.org to donate online or by mail.

A date for a gathering of friends, a tribute to Tom's life, and a "paddle out" waterman's service will be determined for the spring.

Family and friends are welcome to submit online condolences at www.mundenfuneralhome.net.

Arrangements by Munden Funeral Home & Crematory in Morehead City, NC.
