Theodore Miller

November 3, 1913 — July 18, 2012

Theodore Milton Miller, 98, passed away peacefully July 18.

Ted spent his youth in Baltimore and received a BS in Chemistry from Johns Hopkins University in 1935. In 1932, he joined a search for sunken treasure with the S.S. Merida Salvage Operation. He worked for Foster Snell in Brooklyn and Office of Price Administration in Washington, and served in the US Army from 1943-1946. He arrived in Carteret County 63 years ago on his schooner, Scotia Lady and began working with Wallace Menhaden Products. He also formed an independent laboratory, Marine Chemurgics, in his back yard in the community of Ocean. Ted’s mix of scientific method and creative invention led to many innovative ventures. For example, he supplied Dr. E. H. Ahrens Jr. of the Rockefeller Institute with high quality menhaden fish oil for a pioneering study of fish oil and human heart health, published in The Lancet, January 1959. The first NCSU Seafood Lab was housed at Marine Chemurgics, then moved to Morehead City where Ted became Food Science Seafood Specialist and Resident Director in 1970. He particularly enjoyed worked through the Seafood Extension Service with small family businesses along the NC coast. In the mid-1970s, Ted returned to Marine Chemurgics, undertaking numerous research projects related to fish oil and food science.

After the 1990 death of his wife of 40 years, he closed his laboratory and at age 76, embarked on a series of travels with his golden retriever throughout the US, Mexico, Yukon, Alaska, and eventually "landed" in Cow Head, Newfoundland, where he built a summer cabin and became a valued member of the community. He wrote extensively about how to survive the loss of a spouse and remain productive, emphasizing the importance of "human contacts, nutrition, exercise and writing.” He chronicled his thoughts and travels in a book on his web site: www.WildegeestFoundation.org . In 2004 he developed a research farm and test kitchen in Ocean, called Earthwise Farm, and formed a private foundation to promote his philosophy of life and continue exploring the benefits of high quality Omega 3 fish oil.

He is preceded in death by parents, Cecilia Berkwit and Louis William Miller, brother Sydney Miller, and wife Sylvia Flower Miller, and survived by daughters Cynthia Miller, Leslie Deede Miller, Jennifer Miller and son Todd Miller, their spouses, six grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
