Sylvia Dean (Willis) Walsh

September 11, 1937 — October 8, 2014

On October 8, 2014 at 4:15 p.m., Sylvia Walsh, age 77, relinquished her struggle with cancer and passed peacefully away at her home on Bogue Sound surrounded by the love of family and friends.

Ms. Walsh attended St. James United Methodist Church in Newport where her  memorial service will be held 3:00 pm Friday, October 17, 2014 with Rev. Tom Suplee officiating.

Born in Morehead City, North Carolina on September 11, 1937 to Syble Prescott Willis of Newport and Alton Willis of Morehead City, both of whom precede her in death, Ms. Walsh lived a full and accomplished life.

She placed a deep and committed value on family and was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, and grandmother. In addition to her family life, she was an equestrian and owned, trained, and showed hunter-jumper horses in Tennessee, Alabama, and throughout the Southeast. Additionally, she was an unwavering advocate for animal rights; serving as the president of her local Human Society and as a member of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), and the Humane Society of the United States. She also found much joy and fulfillment in ballroom dancing and danced competitively for nearly two decades.

Throughout her life, Ms. Walsh lived in North Carolina, Texas, Florida, Virginia, Alabama, and Tennessee and enjoyed many opportunities to travel nationally and internationally. However, she always called Newport home, returning as often as possible during her lifetime.

She will be missed by her brother, Jerald "Tom" Prescott Willis; sister-in-law, Jane Willis; son, Joey Walsh; daughter, Julie Walsh Covarrubias; son-in-law, Armando Covarrubias; two grandsons, Adrian and Julian Walsh; former husband, Eamonn Walsh; and many other loving family members and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that those who wish to honor her life do so through donations of time or money to their local animal shelter.
