Sylvia Southerland Brown, 81, of Carteret County, passed away on Friday, January 5, 2018 at the SECU Hospice House in Newport.
Her funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at Munden Funeral Home in Morehead City, officiated by Chaplain Rick Brooks. Interment will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Rose Hill, NC.
Sylvia was born on March 5, 1936 in Kinston and grew up in Duplin County. She was a beloved nurse for many years at both Carteret and Craven County Hospitals and was a member of Saint Peter's United Methodist Church in Morehead City.
Sylvia was an avid reader who loved walking on the beach, listening to the waves and collecting seashells. She loved playing the piano and singing, oil painting and dancing. She loved exploring her Scottish heritage and traveling abroad. Sylvia loved small animals, especially kittens, rabbits and wild birds but more than anything, she loved her children, grandchildren and family and her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
She is survived by her daughters, Amy Salter and husband, Paul, of Havelock and Jill Roberts of Carteret County; granddaughters, Kathryn Salter of Havelock, Sarah McCollum and husband, David, of Charlotte, Jordan Augenstein and husband, Don, of Charlotte, and Natalie Kollar and husband, Christopher, of New Bern; grandson, Austin James Stone, stationed at Norfolk, VA; great-grandchildren, Hayden, Jeremiah and Zoe Augenstein of Carteret County and William McCollum of Charlotte.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Elbert H. Southerland and Elma Allen Southerland; daughter, Lori Brown Beacham; sisters, Mickie Evans and Judy Armstrong; brothers, Gerald Southerland and Pat Southerland; and former husband, James Alton Brown, Jr.
Family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at Munden Funeral Home in Morehead City
