Susan Louise Mazzarella Lewis 63, of Harkers Island, left this earthly world to enter that heavenly city Wednesday, September 14, 2011 at Taylor Extended Care. She fought a good fight and kept her faith while battling cancer the last couple of years.
A celebration of her life will be held 6:00 pm Saturday at Smyrna Pentecostal Holiness Church with Rev. Manley Rose, Rev. Jack Mumford, and Pastor Rylan Jones officiating. Interment will be 11:00 am Sunday at Armecia Lewis Cemetery, Harkers Island.
Susan was a Harkers Island born and bred girl. She attended the old Island School and made the ceremonial walk to the new Harkers Island School. She attended Smyrna High School for three years and as a senior was the first graduating class from East Carteret High School in 1966. In her younger years she worked opening scallops along some of Harkers island finest ladies. For 21 years she worked as a waitress to Island Restaurant "Listons". She was a private duty sitter with the elderly at Taylor Extended Care during the last five years. The most rewarding job she had was being "MIMI" to Isabella and Susanne Taylor, quitting all jobs to help raise the apples of her eye. Even getting her drivers license for the 1st time 15 years ago so she could commute to Sea Level to be with her babies.
She enjoyed following her daughter in the 1990's as a Marching Mariner, following them to Macy's Parade in NY and the Rose Bowl in CA. But during the last 10 years she has followed her granddaughters to softball, basketball or soccer games, band concerts and dance recitals. Susan loved her family and her church. She loved all her brothers and sisters in Christ.
She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Guyon D. "Dannie" Lewis of Harkers Island; daughter, Danielle Lewis Taylor "Dani Jo" and husband Harry G. Taylor, Jr. of Sea Level; granddaughters, Isabella Marie Taylor and Ava Susanne Taylor of Sea Level, sister, Joanne Poole and husband Thomas of Beaufort; brothers -in-law, Everett Steven "Buddy" Lewis of Harkers Island, Richard A. "Dick" Lewis and wife Charlotte of Morehead City, and Ronnie Lewis; nieces and nephews, William Keith Moore, Jr. Kathy Gillikin, Mark Lewis, Scarlett Willis, Shelly Garner, Corey Lewis and Allison Hodges; many great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Louise Willis Chadwick; son, Robert Wayne "Bobby" Moore; and sister, Patricia Rae Willis.
The family will receive friends following the service.
