Steven H. Stephens Jr., 68, of Beaufort, passed away on Thursday, March 10, 2022, at his home, following a brief yet heroic fight with cancer.
His memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 26th at Trinity Baptist Church, 4815 Six Forks Rd., Raleigh, NC 27609. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service.
Steven was born on May 26, 1953, in Sarasota, Florida, to the late Steven and Rita Stephens. He moved to Raleigh, North Carolina when he was 14 and then to the Crystal Coast later in life. Steven had a strong love of the Lord and was a faithful member of Trinity Baptist Church in Raleigh and where he was actively involved in the Bobbie Furr Sunday School Class.
As a skilled and talented carpenter, Steven was self-employed as a custom cabinet maker in Raleigh for 40 years. He used that gift to bless numerous lives with handcrafted inlaid wooden crosses that he made and gifted to families who were going through difficult times. It’s easily said that hundreds of people have that special emblem of Christ’s love. Steven also enjoyed using his skill to make unique wooden cutting boards which he happily shared with friends and relatives. In addition to that, he made beautiful pieces of furniture for Trinity Baptist and various churches.
After retirement, he and his wife Judy relocated to Straits in July of 2021. It was there that he began enjoying his retirement years, he bought a boat, took up fishing and thoroughly enjoyed his time on the water. Golfing, fishing, and carving duck decoys were among his favorite hobbies. He was also a member of the Core Sound Decoy Carvers Guild. When he wasn’t in his workshop, he loved playing with his grandchildren who affectionately knew him as “Pop Pop”.
Steven is survived by his wife, Judy Stephens of the home; stepdaughter, Jennifer S. Mills and husband Dwight “DJ” of Weaverville, NC; brothers, Dana Stephens and wife Linda of Concord and David Stephens and wife Betsy, of Concord; along with grandchildren, Addison DeWitt-Stephens, Rosalie DeWitt-Stephens, and Ava Lee Mills.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Core Sound Decoy Carvers Guild, 1574 Harkers Island Rd., Beaufort, NC 28516.
