Stephen “Steve” Dale Wickizer, 71, of Morehead City, passed away on, Saturday, July 8, 2017 at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, NC.
A funeral service will be held for Steve at 2:00 pm on Thursday, July 13, 2017 at First United Methodist Church, Morehead City with Rev. Powell Osteen officiating. Interment will follow at Gethsemane Memorial Park.
Steve was born and raised in the Promise Land area of Morehead City. After graduating from Morehead City High School in 1963 he enlisted in the United States Air Force where he honorably served for 6 years, including a tour of Vietnam. He returned to Morehead City and married his high school friend, Phyllis McCabe. He started his civil service career upon returning at Cherry Point. Steve started in the shop and worked his way to the title of Logistic Management Specialist. He retired as a GS14 in 2003. As an active member of the once formed Morehead City Jaycees, he was awarded Carteret County Citizen of the year. For nearly 15 years after his children graduated from West Carteret High School, he continued to design props and assist the pit crew with the marching patriots on Friday nights or with competitions as far away as Florida, Arizona, Indianapolis and even Canada. With his captain’s license in hand, he spent a majority of his retirement on the water, either offshore fishing, taking family and friends out for recreational fishing and boat rides or continuing his hobby learned in high school of building model boats that were displayed in his house or given to special friends and family. Steve was a dedicated family man that truly enjoyed spending time with his children and especially his two grandchildren. Known as “Mr. Fix-it”, Steve was always there to help neighbors and friends at the drop of a hat. Boy Scout Troop 130 held a special place in his heart, where he was a member as a young boy. As a father, he was able to assist the troop as his son climbed the ranks to earn his Eagle Scout honor and once again, he was thrilled to be there to help as he could once his grandson joined the troop in 2014.
Steve is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Phyllis McCabe Wickizer of the home; daughter, Amy Wickizer Byrd and husband Lin of Morehead City; son, Brandon Dale Wickizer and wife Julie of Morehead City; grandchildren, Harrison and Emmy; numerous nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Bogie.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Victor Homer Wickizer and Ruby Guthrie Wickizer; sister, Susan Wickizer Shields; and brother, Victor H. Wickizer, Jr., all of Morehead City.
