Stephen Copeland Shelton-Smith, 28, of Morehead City, NC, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, March 18, 2018 at his home.
He was born on April 2, 1989 to Sallie Oettinger Smith and Stephen Walter Shelton. Stephen attended West Carteret High School and graduated from the Phelps School in Malvern, PA in 2007.
Growing up on the coast, Stephen’s life was filled with a love for all water activities. He especially loved boating and going to “Shack” with friends. In 2001, Stephen moved with his family to Germany where he was afforded the opportunity to travel extensively throughout Europe. After snowboarding in the Alps, he developed a love for the mountains which continued upon his return to the States.
Stephen was a gentle soul who was deeply devoted to his family and friends. He had a great sense of humor, loved to play practical jokes and was quite the comedian. His smile would light up a room and his laugh was contagious. Stephen shared a unique bond with his twin sister who was his confidant and best friend. Despite Stephen’s many health challenges through the years, he always remained positive and determined. He was generous, loyal, selfless and kind.
In addition to his mother and father, Stephen is survived by three siblings: twin sister, Susan, brother, Gunnar and sister, Taylar. He is also survived by his grandmothers, Susan Gardner Oettinger of Morehead City and Judith Shelton of Safety Harbor, FL; uncle, Robert Oettinger of Raleigh; aunt, Vickie Oettinger Elmore of Kinston; along with many much-loved cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, Curtis Glenn Smith, Jr. who lovingly adopted Stephen in 2001. He is also preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Leonard Lee Oettinger, Jr. and uncle, Leonard Lee Oettinger, III; and paternal grandfather, Thomas Shelton.
The family and church will have a celebration of Stephen’s life at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church on Friday, March 23, 2018 at 2:00 p.m., officiated by the Reverend John Pollock. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Austin Veterinary Outreach and Rescue at 1550 Lennoxville Rd, Beaufort, NC 28516 or to St. Andrews Episcopal Church at 2005 Arendell St, Morehead City, NC 28557.
