Shirley Ann Schaeffler, 82, of Pine Knoll Shores, NC, passed away from complications of pneumonia at Carteret Medical Center on April 25; she died with family members at her side.

A memorial service will be held at Munden Funeral Home on June 19 at 2 p.m. Reverend Timothy J. Havlicek of the First Presbyterian Church of Morehead City will lead the service; Shirley’s family will receive friends after the service at the funeral home.

Shirley Jaquillard was born in Lynbrook, NY, daughter of Petra (Jorgensen) and Harry Jaquillard Sr., and sister to Harry Jaquillard Jr.  A graduate of Malvern High School, Shirley married Charles E. Schaeffler, Jr. on July 15, 1953.  While living on Long Island, as a dedicated homemaker, Shirley devoted her life to her family of five children raising them in the Protestant faith. Shirley also volunteered with the PTA and other community services, worked part-time in the family owned business - Massapequa Seed and Garden Supply, and served as the founding President of the Massapequa Evening Chapter of the Nassau County Homemakers Council. In 1989, she and Charlie moved to Pine Knoll Shores where, as Master Gardeners with the Carteret County Chapter of the NC Cooperative Extension Agency, they volunteered with the Agency and other garden clubs. Throughout her time living in the area, Shirley owned and operated her store, The Light Tenders Cottage and enjoyed being an active member of The Pine Knoll Shores Women’s Club, Carteret County Antiques and Collectibles Club, and several craft alliances.

Shirley was preceded in death by her loyal husband Charles (1999), and then her later-life friend, Al VanEssendelft (2011).  She is survived by her five Schaeffler children and their families: Chuck and his wife, Janet; Kris Alison, her husband Todd and their son Kristoffer; Kim Emily and her sons Nathaniel and Charles Badger; Kurt and his life-partner, Rebecca Coco; and William and his daughters, Samantha and Alexa.  Shirley also leaves behind, her brother Harry, his wife Arlene and their daughter Dena; her cousins Jean Carol Hart, Bob Jorgensen, Karin Hinrichsen David and John Hinrichsen; along with her wonderful friends and kind neighbors.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Pine Knoll Shores Women’s Club scholarship fund at 100 Municipal Drive, Pine Knoll Shores, NC 28512.

In our grief, we find comfort in knowing “God has her in his keeping… We have her in our hearts.”
