Shelva Jean Mann of Mill Creek peacefully passed from this life into eternal joy on Wednesday, October 23rd 2013. She spent her final days on earth at the Hospice House of Carteret County surrounded by family, friends and a caring staff.
Shelva was preceded in death by her grandparents, Asa and Pearl Mann of Mill Creek along with Ellery and Clara Jones Hardesty also of Mill Creek. Also preceding her were her parents, Leon Mann and Jannie Hardesty Mann of Mill Creek and a sister, Cynthia Mann Dail of Salty Shores.
She is survived by two brothers, Wilbert and Dennis Mann, both of Texas and one sister, Hilda Mann Farthing of Maryland. She also leaves behind many cousins, nieces and nephews and one aunt, Gilda Hardesty Pesta who was her loving care-giver during her years of extended illness. She found joy in her retirement years in her two girls, “Bitsy” and “Bubbles”, her faithful canine companions.
Shelva was a graduate of Newport Consolidated School, Emmanuel College of Franklin Springs, Ga. and of East Carolina University. She valued education and held a Masters Degree in Early Childhood Development. She began her teaching career as an elementary teacher in Carteret County at Harkers Island. Later she transferred to Newport Elementary and taught there until the late 1970s. She felt led to serve her church and left teaching for a season to serve the North Carolina Conference of the International Pentecostal Holiness Church in Falcon, NC. While working with Rev. Wiley Clark, she received the call to serve to the IPHC at its international headquarters in Oklahoma City, OK. Upon returning home, she resumed teaching in Craven County at Graham A. Barden Elementary School in Havelock. While continuing her labor of love as a teacher, Shelva simultaneously worked at the A&P Food Store in Morehead City, Wal-mart Stores of Morehead City and was a contributing writer for The Carteret News-Times with weekly articles in Compass Points with The Mill Creek News.
Shelva served her community as an elected member of The Carteret County Board of Education. She also served as a board member for many years on The Mill Creek Volunteer Fire Department Board of Directors. She loved her community and was a promoter of the Mill Creek Oyster Festival where she was a vendor of homemade baked and canned goods. She loved growing flowers, baking cakes, traveling to exotic places like Hawaii, the Bahamas and Israel, and spending hours in conversation and laughter with some special friends and family.
A memorial service celebrating Shelva’s life and recent graduation will be held at Reeces Chapel Baptist Church on Saturday October 26th at 2:00pm with Rev. Winkie Chadwick officiating. Visitation with family and friends will occur one hour prior to the service at Reeces Chapel in Mill Creek.
