Sara “Sally” Waters, 73 of Emerald Isle, passed away Saturday morning March 26th 2016 at Carolina East Medical Center.

Born in Spartanburg, SC, on December 28, 1942, she grew up in Anderson, SC. After graduating Phi Beta Kappa from Duke in 1964, she briefly taught high school history in Richmond, VA, where she met her husband.  In 1965, they moved to Hampden – Sydney College, where she lived and worked until retiring as the Director of Financial Aid in 1998.

She stayed busy during her eighteen years of retirement in Emerald Isle.  Sally played a major role in the building of the Western Carteret Library in Cape Carteret.  She was an avid animal lover and a dedicated volunteer for many years in the Emerald Isle Sea Turtle Program.  The activity dearest to her heart, however, was her involvement in NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness.  She was the current president of the Coastal Division of NAMI.  She and husband Johnny taught NAMI's signature Family To Family class for many years for those whose relatives suffered from mental illness, as well as leading a support group in Jacksonville.  She also adored and spoiled Bully, her canine companion for 16 years.

Sally is survived by her husband of 51 years and faithful traveling partner John H. Waters III, sons John H. Waters IV of Washington, DC and Edmund Todd Waters of Emerald Isle, sister Ann Ward and husband Bob of Chapel Hill, NC, nieces Katie Dickey (Will), Cathy Stanley (Shawn), and Mary Beth Neckowitz (Josh), and nephews Craig Waters (Cyndi), David Waters (Will), Mark Waters (Cindy), Parker Waters (Kim), and Richard Waters (Cindy).

A memorial service will be held by the family at 2:00 pm on Friday, April 1, 2016, at Emerald Isle Baptist Church with Pastor Freddie Braswell officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Sally’s honor to NAMI, 309 W Millbrook Rd Ste 121, Raleigh, NC 27609-4394
