Sanford Cote White

Chief Engineer Sanford Cote White, Coast Guard (Retired), 89, of Newport, went to his heavenly home on Saturday, March 7­, 2020, at the Crystal Coast Hospice House.

His funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 10, 2020, at Munden Funeral Home, officiated by B.J. Bell. Interment will follow at Amariah Garner Cemetery.

Cote was born to Ezra Leroy and Contennea White on August 7, 1930. He was retired from the United States Coast Guard and the Army Corps of Engineers. While in the Coast Guard, he was awarded the highest USCG Peace Time Medal for his heroism.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Evelyn Graham White of the home; children, Sanford “Sandy” Ray White and wife Melva of Newport, Joy Bell and husband Bobby of Newport, Angela White Noe and husband John of Colerain; sister, Rita Glover and husband Ray of Sims; brother, Bob C. White of Carolina Beach; 6 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ezra Leroy and Contennea White; sisters, Florence Fulcher and Dorothy Sadler; and brothers, Eric White, Virgil White and Morgan White.

The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 10, 2020, at Munden Funeral Home prior to the service.
