Samuel Smith died peacefully, before dawn, on Saturday October 26, 2013.
Sammy was born in Bogue, Carteret County, North Carolina on January 16, 1929, the son of Lloyd C. and Dolly Weeks Smith. He had a happy childhood on Bogue Sound, fishing, swimming and sailing with his five siblings.
Sammy served in the U.S. Coast Guard and later owned Acme Movers and Storage for many years, with his wife Cathy. He was named North Carolina Mover of the Year in 1985 and retired in 1990. After retirement, Sammy enjoyed traveling with Cathy, taking care of his plants and birds, woodworking and spending time with his six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Catherine Clark Smith, whom he loved dearly, his sisters Eleanor Arthur and Esther Powers, brothers Paul Smith and Gordon Smith.
Sammy is survived by his brother Terry Smith and wife Dorothy of Snead's Ferry, step-son Clark Dollar and wife Terri of Raleigh, NC, and step-daughter Missy Horton and husband David of Morehead City. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Aubrey Dollar and Caroline Dollar of New York, NY, Allie Horton and Miles Horton of Raleigh, NC, Emily Horton of Los Angeles, CA, and Ana Horton of Morehead City, NC.
The family is honoring Sammy's request for a private memorial service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society 930-B Wellness Dr. Greenville, NC 27834 or Hospice of Carteret County PO Drawer 1619 Morehead City, NC 28557.
