Samuel Hughes, Sr.

August 24, 1924 — February 17, 2013

CAP'N SAMUEL LEE “SAMMY” HUGHES, SR. died Sunday, February 17, 2013 at Carteret General Hospital after a long period of declining health. Right up until the end, he kept his incredibly cheerful spirit and maintained a “two thumbs up” outlook on life through his abiding faith in Jesus Christ.

Born August 24, 1924 in Morehead City to the late Marvin Lee and Estella Lewis Hughes, he graduated Morehead City High school in 1943, attending his baccalaureate service with his draft notice under his cap and gown.  He served in the US Army during World War II, proudly claiming to have earned “a silver spoon with an oatmeal clump” and later served in the National Guard during the Korean War.  He was a graduate of the Coyne Electrical and Radio School in Chicago, Il, and worked for 37 years at the Naval Air Rework Facility at Cherry Point before becoming a Licensed Electrical Contractor for many years.

A true son of Bogue Sound, he was an avid sailor, often winning races in his 24-foot sprit-rigged deadrise skiff, “Damfino”.   In 1955, he and his crew survived an explosion aboard the skiff when it struck a mine in Beaufort Inlet and sank.  Later, he built a sloop in his backyard which he sailed until his health prevented it.  He was a retired member of the Morehead City Fire Department, having served a leiutenant, captain, assistant chief and chief in the days when the words ”fire” and “science” were not used together in a sentence.   For many years, he donned a familiar red suit and hat each December, riding through the city on a fire truck spreading Christmas Cheer to all the children.  He was also an expert marksman, and was a founding member and past president of the Carteret Rifle and Pistol Club.  He was a life member of Morehead-Beaufort Elks Lodge # 1710

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a son, Gregory Paul Hughes.  Surviving are wife Mary of the home; daughter Brenda Carol Thomas and husband Milton of Newport; son Sammy Jr and wife Sally of Newport; grandaughters, Tami H. Johnson of Greenville and Rose E. Bowden of Newport; sister, Rilla H. Gould of Morehead City; neices, Julia Gould Charles and husband Mike of Morehead City and  Allen,Texas; Lynn Gould Perkinson and husband Warren of Petersburg, Virginia; Nephews, Capt. Terrell Gould and wife Pat of Gloucester; William Scott White and wife Becky of Morehead City; Norman G.
