Sallie Beam Guthrie, 80, of Morehead City, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 6, 2024, at Brookdale Senior Living in Cary.
A funeral service to honor Sallie’s life will be held at 4 p.m., Saturday, June 15th at St. Peter’s United Methodist Church in Morehead City, officiated by Rev. Karl Zorowski. Entombment will follow at Gethsemane Memorial Park in Newport. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Sallie was born on December 6, 1943, in Raleigh North Carolina. She was adopted shortly thereafter by her loving parents, the late Robert and Luna Beam. She graduated from Broughton High School in 1961.
A friend to all animals, Sallie had a soft spot in her heart for horses. She began riding lessons at Meredith College when she was just five years old. Growing up, she competed in numerous horse shows across the state and won several ribbons. Quite the equestrian, Sallie rode well into her early sixties, on her beloved horse Stanley, whom she owned for more than 25 years.
Her later years were spent in Morehead City where she enjoyed shelling, boating, reading, caring for her precious pets, and being involved in the church and community. She was a member of the Garden Club of Morehead City, serving as Vice President from 1998 to 2001 and as President from 2002 to 2004, a member of the Crystal Coast Republican Women’s Club, a member of the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum, and a member of the History Museum of Carteret County.
Sallie was also an active member of St. Peter’s United Methodist Church. She loved her church family and volunteered there when she could.
She is survived by her children, Elizabeth Williams Johnson (Chad) of Willow Spring; Robert Beam Williams (Jennifer), Roger Page Williams, and Warren David Williams (Nikki), all of Raleigh; grandchildren McKajah Graham Johnson, Sydney Alling Johnson, and Radley Beam Johnson.
In addition to her parents, Sallie was preceded in death by her husband, James Edward Guthrie.
The family wishes to express its gratitude to the staff and caregivers at Brookdale as well as to the nurses from Heartland Hospice for taking such good care of Sallie.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Carteret County Humane Society, P.O. Box 357, Newport, NC 28570, or Heartland Hospice, 4515 Falls of Neuse Rd., Ste. 420, Raleigh, NC 27609.
