A native of Carteret County, Sadie was born May 19, 1915 to the late Byrd and Bessie Merrill Small of the Core Creek Community. She completed her education at St. Paul's School in Beaufort.
In 1936 she married Archie Hardesty and lived and worked beside him at The Hardesty Farm until his death in 1996. She moved to Morehead City and later to New Bern to be with her daughter Johnise Koonce. At the time of her death she was residing at the Courtyards at Berne Village in New Bern, NC.
Miss Sadie, as she was fondly known, was a member of Core Creek United Methodist Church where she served as Sunday School Treasurer for many years. When she could no longer drive she moved her membership to Saint James United Methodist Church in Newport, where she enjoyed the Senior Citizens Group. She worked the polls at Harlow Precinct for many years.
Her claim to fame was the produce she sold at the Curb Market. Everything she sold she either raised, preserved, baked, or crafted. She was well known for her abilities with a needle. Sewing, crocheting, quilting, and cross stitching were exciting activities for her. She looked forward to one of the girls bringing her a new project. She personified the scripture in Proverbs titled "The Wife of Noble Character".
