Russell Albert Bell, 62, of Atlantic Beach, passed away January 3, 2011, at the VA Medical Center in Durham, NC.
Services will be held 11:00 am Saturday, January 8, 2010, at Munden Funeral Home with Rev. Darrell Williams officiating. A reception and farewell on the boardwalk will be held at a later date.
Mr. Bell was born January 11, 1948, to Albert and Joy Marshall Bell of Torrance, CA. As a young man, he excelled in sports, such as cross country track, was a lively musician, and served as drum major for school band. He was active in Boy Scouts and church with his family. After graduation from high school, Rusty joined the Marine Corps, serving honorably in Vietnam. Upon discharge from the military, he began civilian life in Atlantic Beach, NC around 1969. He was skilled at carpentry and construction, and was also an avid athlete, with a passion for volleyball and body surfing.
Russ and his wife, Gayle, married in 1981 and had two sons. The family loved beach life, and traveled across country to the California and Florida coasts for many camping adventures. He enjoyed the friendship of many Atlantic Beach locals and could tell a good tale. He was quietly a gentleman, a concerned patriot, and a citizen soldier. He advocated fun and the A. B. Circle nightlife, and was always available to help with hurricane preparations and recovery.
Russ lived his last years surrounded by his vast collections, protected his privacy, and benefited greatly from the help of Veterans. He was a man among men.
He is survived by his sons, Rion and wife, Kristen of Wake Forest, and Nathan Bell of Greenville and Morehead City; and the mother of his children, Gayle Joyner of Morehead City. His extended and loving family who still reside on the West Coast include his mother; step-father, Murial Moore; half-brother, Glenn Moore of Torrance, CA; and sister Wendy Marcy of Temecula, CA.
He was preceded in death by his father and two sisters.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
