Rudy Blake Smith, 71, of Broad Creek, made his final journey home on Wednesday, February 4, 2015 after a long battle with complications from a stroke. He made his journey peacefully at home surrounded by his loved ones.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm Friday at Broad Creek Church of God with Rev. Robbie Strickland officiating. Interment will follow at Broad Creek Community Cemetery.
Rudy was born August 11, 1943 in Salter Path, NC to the late James W. Smith and Julie Smith Cartwright. He was married to the love of his life, Patricia Smith, for 51 happy years. Rudy was known for his great strength and devotion to his family. He was a faithful husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many. He was a quiet and gentle man who was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. Rudy spent his life as a fisherman and carpenter and retired from Cherry Point in 2014 with 27 and half years of service. He enjoyed time with his family and loved food of all kinds. He never turned down a chance to enjoy a great meal. Rudy was known for his heart of gold and will be missed by many.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years Patricia Smith of the home; two daughters Denise Lashley and husband Jimmy of Newport, and Samantha Rhoades and husband Richard of Broad Creek; a son Chris Smith and wife Crystal of Wendell; a sister Sylvia Mann of Morehead City; and seven grandchildren J.C. Lashley of Newport, Shana Lashley of Newport, Tyler Chadwick of Broad Creek, Brooke Chadwick of Broad Creek, Dalton Rhoades of Broad Creek, Emmalynn Smith of Wendell, and Ella Smith of Wendell.
He was preceded in death by his father James W. Smith, mother Julie Salter Smith Cartwright, stepfather Buster Cartwright, and brother Stanley Smith.
Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 pm Thursday at the Church.
