Rudolph Valentino Nelson, 81, passed away November 21, 2010 at Harborview Health Care Center in Morehead City.
He was born September 8, 1929, to Bradford and Beulah Nelson. He was a member of the Pentecostal Holiness Church of Harkers Island, NC.
He married Fannie R. Nelson on June 22, 1951, and they had three daughters.
He was a commercial fisherman most of his life. He worked on trawlers such as the “7 Brothers”, “Josephine”, “Dickie Boy”, and “Tammy and Tracy”. He was a very hard worker, so full of energy. After working the big trawlers, he long-hauled with Billy Howard and McKinley Lawrence for several years. In 2000, he put in an application to the NC Ferry Division. At the age of 72, he was hired to work at Cherry Branch Ferry Division.
We thought it would be a good job for him, to slow him down. It turned out, he was so active, fellow workers would tell him to slow down. Year after year- Rudy would say “ One more year.” He ended up working seven years until sickness made him quit.
His dream was to live to be 80 years old. He made it to 81 years old.
