Rudolph Edison Guthrie, 89, of Morehead City, died Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at Crystal Coast Hospice House.
A funeral service will be held 11:00 am Saturday at Parkview Baptist Church with Rev. Mark McNeil officiating . Interment will follow at Gethsemane Memorial Park.
Rudolph was a member of Parkview Baptist Church. He served in the 45th Army Infantry Division also known as The Thunderbird Division. He served in five major campaigns, in North Africa and Europe. Then the division took part in the battle of Anzio, Italy and was a part of the Allied Liberation of Rome and then participated in the battles for the Liberation of France, and the final Allied push into Germany that ended the war. The division helped to liberate and repatriate many people from the concentration camps back to their own countries. Rudolp was so proud to have served his country during WWII. He also drove a truck for more than 50 years.
He is survived by his wife Annie Willis Guthrie of Morehead City; two sons Melvin Wayne Guthrie and wife Sharon of Newport, and Robert H. Hughes and wife Sandra of Morehead City; a sister Clara Guthrie Rizzo of Newport; two grandchildren Melvin Guthrie, Jr., of Tennessee, and Adrienne Taylor of Indiana; and three great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents Rudolph and Cannie Guthrie, one brother, and one sister.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
