Ruby Brewer Styron

With cherished, precious memories and a heart of gratitude for the sweetness, love, and dignity with which she lived, we announce the passing of Ruby Brewer Styron, who departed this world peacefully on March 8, 2025, at the blessed age of 95.

A funeral service to honor Ruby’s life will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 15th at the Davis Original Free Will Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. Kevin Stott. Interment will follow at Murphy Cemetery, located at the south end of Community Road. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., Friday, March 14th, also at the Davis Original Free Will Baptist Church.

Born at home in Manning, South Carolina on the last day of 1929, Ruby entered this world as the third of seven children welcomed by loving parents Eula Baggett Brewer and John Biniard Brewer.

Ruby lived with a profound sense of gratitude and appreciation for all the gifts of life, especially the small things. She found joy in simple pleasures—a colorful sunset, the laughter of her grandchildren, the comfort of familiar traditions—and taught those around her to recognize the beauty in everyday moments. Her ability to appreciate life's blessings was a testament to her wisdom and the fullness with which she embraced each day.

In the fall of 1951, she met the love of her life, Milton Styron. Together they built a beautiful life and family in Davis, where Ruby fully immersed herself in coastal living—learning to make light rolls, head shrimp, open scallops, fish and pack soft crabs. In addition to long hours spent at the scallop benches, opening scallops in the wintertime, she also used her bookkeeping experience in supporting the work of Styron Brothers Seafood. Ruby was also dedicated to the work of their church where she was a faithful member, Sunday School Teacher, and recording secretary. She was known for her Shrimp Creole that was eagerly anticipated at every family reunion and church dinner. She also cooked many platters of seafood in her support of grieving families in the community.

Ruby was intelligent and well-read, coming to Davis in 1953 with a trunk full of books in tow. She loved learning, which she instilled in her children and grandchildren. Above all else, she was devoted to her family, and it was in their love that she found her truest joy and purpose. She shared a deep, unwavering bond with her beloved husband, with whom she spent 61 years building a life filled with cherished memories. As a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she was a constant source of guidance, support, and unconditional love for her family. Her pride in them knew no bounds, and her nurturing spirit shaped each of their lives in profound ways.

With each new generation, she poured her wisdom, warmth, and affection, creating a legacy of love that will continue for years to come. Whether gathered around the dinner table or during quiet moments spent together, her presence was a source of comfort and strength, and her family was the center of her world. She found immeasurable happiness in the laughter and milestones of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and she cherished each moment shared with them beyond measure.

She is survived by her siblings, Doris Brewer Haberkorn, Ann Brewer Morris, and John Brewer (Pauline), all of Manning, SC; daughter and son-in-law, Helen and Terry Taylor of Adams Creek, NC; daughter-in-law, Carrie Ann Styron of Davis, NC; grandchildren, Marie Taylor Riley (George) of Wilmington, NC; Joseph Milton Styron, Jr. (Doug Wallace) of Wilmington, NC, and Lynn Taylor Carter (Ben) of Currituck, NC; six great-grandchildren, Taylor Chism of Wilmington, NC, Austin and Ethan Riley of Wilmington, NC, and Brooks, Wade, and Trent Carter of Currituck, NC; as well as a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and extended family - each of whom held a special place in her heart.

She was preceded in death by her loving parents, John Biniard and Eula Brewer; her husband, Milton Styron; cherished son, Joseph Milton Styron; beloved granddaughter, Bethany Styron; and siblings, Heywood Brewer, Kathleen Brewer Wise, and Judy Brewer. Each loss shaped her, yet her grace and strength never wavered.

Ruby's life was a testament to the power of unconditional love and the enduring strength of family bonds. Her memory will continue to be a blessing and an inspiration to all who were fortunate enough to know her.
