Ronald Eric Matthews Sr

Ronald Eric Matthews, 75, of Newport, died Wednesday, April 1, 2015 at Carteret General Hospital.

A funeral service will be held 2:00 pm Monday, April 6, 2015 at Munden Funeral Home with son Eric Matthews officiating. Interment will follow at Broad Creek Cemetery.

Ronald was honorably discharged from the US Navy after 10 years of service as a machinist mate. He was a minister at Cove Bend in Floral City, FL Church of Christ for 14 years as well as other numerous congregations in Eastern NC. He was an accomplished wood worker that specialized in hand carving figurines. He was a full time husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend to all, and was an active member in the community, despite his health issues.

He is survived by his wife Cherry M. Cannon Matthews of the home; children Cathy M. Kraemer and husband Rob of Crestwood, KY, Ronald "Eric" Matthews, Jr. and wife Sharon of Salem, OH, and Michael N. Matthews and wife Sylvia of Tampa, FL; grandchildren Joshua, Kyle, Jessica, Ben, Drew, Jacob, Katie, and Ian; and great grandson David Eric.

He was preceded in death by his parents Edward and Lillian Matthews, and two sisters Barbara and Peggy.

Visitation will be 12:00-2:00 pm prior to the service.

The family recognizes Ronald's doctor C. V. Purushothaman for his ability to extend his time and improve his quality of life.
