Ronald Grumbkow

October 24, 1944 — January 27, 2021

New Bern

On early Wednesday Morning of the 27th of January 2021, Our Friend Cousin/Relative and Papa, the beloved and famously well-known and highly regarded American, Ronald Curtiss von Grumbkow, gave up the ghost and passed on into the realm of our Heavenly Lord Father, and was pronounced deceased at 2:34 a.m. EST in the Great State of North Carolina, at the hospital of New Bern, the first Swiss Colony in the USA. He was beloved by ALL.

A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, February 5, 2021 at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Jacksonville.

Well four years ago, Papa Ron’s service as a paratrooper came quickly from behind on life’s autobahn, and his legs and hip bones began to suddenly weaken. At this point, Rhett became Ronald’s primary disability care-person and we began a four year process of determining the possibilities of reestablishing Ronald’s ability to walk freely without crutches or without a “walker”. My wonderful dad, papa Ronald, my “dad-dude”, met every single challenge with the excellence, intelligence and will to succeed that an esteemed member of the 101’st Airborne Special Forces, Green Beret, would have within his person Currahee and Hoorah!!

One year ago, at the beginning of the Covid-19 Coronavirus Outbreak, Ronald became very ill and after two months of Airborne-style fighting, our dear Papa Ronnie had to be brought to the hospital by ambulance. After another two months of his son Rhett operating and coordinating his hospitalization and nursing home visit, Ronald made an incredible recovery and returned to his son and his wife Rachel (Lolly/Rushen). It was a GREAT day when he came home to us!. Rhett and Rachel had the opportunity to transform his bedroom into a music and magazine library, with fresh paint and curtains. And Ronald LOVED IT SO!

After hospitalization in early 2020 and 2021, Papa Ronnie enjoyed the comfort of home, family, mobility, and was able to walk with a walker, and crutches and enjoyed so much time with his son, wife, daughter Rushanna, son-in-law Conan Hughes and his absolutely beloved grandchildren, Kyera, Cadin, Kyler and newest edition Mae all of the Hughes side of the family. We watched football, ate wonderful dinners together, saw the beautiful sights of the world and enjoyed coffee and trips to the boutiques and malls and all of the wonderful things in life that a great man like Papa Ron von Grumbkow should enjoy and have in a weekly routine. His love of debating politics was as sharp as the nose cone of the retired Concorde Supersonic Passenger Aircraft, one of his favorite airframes which, he was able to view on the mantle of his library every morning.
