Roland Lawrence
October 10, 1922 — March 17, 2017
Roland D. Lawrence, Sr, 94 of Otway, passed away on Friday, March 17, 2017 at Snug Harbor on Nelson Bay.
Roland was a lifetime member of the Otway Christian Church he dedicated his life and time to the church serving as an elder and on the board for many years. He served in the US Army during WWII where he received the Purple Heart, Silver Star and Bronze Star. Roland was a member of the Crissie Wright Lodge number 741 and a York Rite Shriner. Roland worked in construction for over 70 years ending his career at his business Roland Lawrence and Son Construction.
A funeral service for Roland will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, March 19, 2017 at Otway Christian Church with the Reverend Jack Mumford and Reverend Merritt Watson officiating. Burial will follow at Carteret Memorial Gardens in Beaufort with military honors.
Roland is survived by his wife Ellen G. Lawrence of the home; daughter, Rebecca L Smith and husband Gerry of Morehead City; step-daughter, Eileen Small of Newport; son, Roland Lawrence, Jr. and wife Lisa G. of Beaufort; grandchildren, Gerry “Ted” Smith, Jr. and friend Alicia Nelson, Roland “Davis” Lawrence III; step-daughter, Tanya S. Sewell and husband Thomas, great grand-children; Madison H. Smith, Peyton E. Smith; step great grand-children, Tracy Sewell, Tiffany Sewell; nieces, Jane South, Phyllis Gillikin, Connie Fulcher, Ella Gillikin, Theresa Beecham, Elaine Lawrence, Rita Lawrence, Julie Lawrence, Cheryl Lynn Grimes; nephews, Bill Lloyd, Jimmy Lloyd, Gary Block, Tim Lawrence, Jerry Lawrence, Jr., and Gilbert Wayne Lawrence.
Roland is preceded in death by his wife Janice T. Lawrence; grandsons, Todd Davis Smith and Grayson E. Lawrence; siblings, Theodore Lawrence, Dolly G. Lloyd, Ruby L. Lawrence, Manley Lawrence, OC Lawrence, Jr., Ella Grey Block, Triplets, Jerry Roland and Manley, Ralph Lawrence; niece, Deanna Lawrence; nephew, Manley Lawrence, Jr.
A visitation for Roland will be held from 6:00 – 8:00 PM on Saturday, March 18, 2017 at Otway Christian Church.
