Roger W Jones, 93, died at his home in Broad Creek last night, December 22, surrounded by his loving family. Roger was predeceased in death by his wife, Lucy Adams Jones, who died in 2004. Roger was born in Newport, NC November 29, 1918, to Edward Dennard and Eudora Dixon Jones. He is survived by two sons, Roger William (RW) and his wife Barbara and Charles A Jones. Also surviving is his daughter Maxine Jones-Ballantine and her husband Bill. All reside in Broad Creek. Roger had six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.
Mr Jones is also survived by three sisters, Gwendolyn Dodson of Virginia Beach, Va, Violet Tyndall of Dallas, Texas and Etta(Teen) Hewett of Broad Creek, and a brother Donald E Jones of St Louis, Missouri. He leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews who will miss their Uncle Roger.
Roger has been a "pillar" in his community, county and state. He was a true visionary and saw great things and helped to bring them to fruition. He has sat on the board of Carteret Craven Electric Membership Corporation for sixty years and just last year, 2010, was honored with the North Carolina Governor's award, "The Order of the Longleaf Pine" presented to him at the CCEMC annual meeting. Mr Jones served as vice-president of CCEMC from 1970-1983 and then served as president for 20 years. He has continued to serve as a director up to his death and has been awarded the distinguished honor of Director Emeritus of Carteret Craven EMC.
Roger and some other members of the area organized and formed the West Carteret Water Corporation, a commodity long awaited in the Western Carteret County. He has sat on the board of West Carteret Water Corporation from the beginning and is now Director Emeritus with the Board. He was president of the board for some years.
Mr Jones has been a businessman for years. After his service as a welder in shipyards during the war, along with his wife, he opened a grocery store in Broad Creek. In 1950, he started the R W Jones Seafood Co which exists to this day.His business started with one boat, which he built. Other boats were built by him...he had such engineering knowledge.
Then, in 1978, Roger went to Bayou Le Battre, Alabama and had two 85-foot steel trawlers to add to his fleet and his company continued to grow.
He was so knowledgeable about the fishing industry that it earned him an appointment to the NC Marine Science Council, which brought the state's marine sciences research facilities together to coordinate efforts and apply collectively for federal Sea Grant funding. Roger was originally appointed by NC Governor Bob Scott and reappointed by Govs. James Holshouser and Jim Hunt.
Gov Hunt also appointed Mr Jones to the Seafood Industrial Park Authority, which built the Seafood Park in Wanchese, the only federal, state and county finance project devoted entirely to the seafood processing and fishing industries and where large sport fishing boats and trawlers are built.
Mr Jones also served four years as president of the NC Fisheries Assoc,
Mr Jones loved his community, state...and his home. He will be missed by us all.
