Rochelle "Shell" Benson Blanchard, 91, of Morehead City, the daughter of the late Nora and Will Benson of Benson, NC, died Monday, January 31, 2011 at Crystal Bluffs.
She was well known for her work at Jungle Land where she worked for 26 years as Assistant Manager and Grounds Keeper, and for 19 of those years, she was a Volunteer Firefighter in Pine Knoll Shores. Her charisma would automatically draw people and animals to her, and her love for life was constantly demonstrated by her tireless energy and involvement in all things around her.
In earlier years, she loved playing golf and going fishing. For several years, she was the oldest member of the Bogue Banks Baptist Church where she remained a member. She loved going to the Leon Mann Senoir Center where she enjoyed competing with her friends and winning many medals in playing horse shoes, shuffle board and Bocci Ball.
A memorial service will be held 2:00 pm Wednesday, February 16, 2011 at Bogue Banks Baptist Church with Rev.
Daniel Wilson officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
She is survived by one son, Lee Blanchard and one daughter, Marie Blanchard, both of Morehead City, another son's widow, Alexis Blanchard of Morehead City, eight grandchidren, 10 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, a number of nephews, nieces and cousins, and Waldo, her funny and lovable talking African Grey Parrot.
She was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters; her daughter, Nona Lockhart and husband Kemp of Morehead City, her daughter Barbara Campbell and husband Bill of Raleigh, and her son, Wayne Blanchard of Morehead City.
