My Dad, My Hero
Bob was born in Bay City, Michigan March 21, 1929 and went to be with his Lord peacefully in his own bed and surrounded by his family on Tuesday, January 10th, 2012 in Morehead City, NC.
He was a great patriot and bravely served his country through three wars - WWII, Korea, and Vietnam.
At the age of 15, his oldest brother was killed on the USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor. In response, Bob lied about his age, joined the Army and served under General McArthur in the Pacific.
When his unit was attacked in Korea, he was one of the few survivors. Wounded in battle, he was captured by North Korean forces and spent two years as a POW. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star for bravery on the battlefield.
During the Vietnam War, he served on helicopters picking up the dead and wounded.
Bob was generous and kind, had a great sense of humor, a quick wit, and never met a stranger. He was a smooth dancer, an amazing swimmer, and a skilled goldsmith and gemologist.
He is survived by his daughter, Tatiana Pabalis McNiel; son in law Reverend Mark McNiel; granddaughter Heather McNiel and her husband, Dan Yim; and grandson, Reverend Jonathan McNiel.
In lieu of flowers, Bob requested gifts be sent to the Reverend Jonathan McNiel Mission Fund 5126 Holly Ln. Morehead City, NC 28557.
