Robert “Bob” William Ivey, 94, of Indian Beach and Burlington, NC, passed away Monday, March 18, 2019, at Carteret Health Care.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 23, 2019 at Munden Funeral Home in Morehead City, NC. A private graveside service in Burlington, NC will follow.
Mr. Bob was born on December 16, 1924, to Claude Rex Ivey and Mary Janet Ivey of Burlington, NC. He attended NC State University before serving in the Army Air Force during World War II from 1942-1946. After returning from service, he married Ella Ruth Holland of Roseboro, NC in 1950. He began his career in the textile industry at his family’s mill, East End Knitting in Burlington, NC. While residing in Burlington, he was a member of the First Baptist Church of Burlington and actively served his community for 13 years as a volunteer Fireman and 50 years as a member of the Elks Lodge.
Upon retirement, he moved to Indian Beach, NC in 1985, where he began a second chapter of his life. He faithfully attended Bogue Banks Baptist Church. You would often find him making deliveries for the family restaurants, carpooling his granddaughter and her friends to and from school and extracurriculars, and sitting outside of Save-A-Stop for his town “office hours”. To all, he was known as “Mr. Bob”, “Uncle Bobby”, “Granddaddy”, and “G-daddy”. He served as a Commissioner of Indian Beach for 30 years, as well as Mayor Pro-Tem, Fire and Police Commissioner. He was instrumental in effecting positive development of Indian Beach. He was a dedicated patriot and public servant who wanted to make the world a better place through his motto of “keep moving forward.” The Robert William Ivey Law Enforcement Center was dedicated in his honor in December 2017.
He is survived by his two daughters, Patricia Ivey of Pine Knoll Shores, NC and Holly Nelson and husband Tom of Burlington, NC; his grandchildren Ivey Summerlin and fiancé Ryan Lion of Washington, DC, Michael Macrae and wife Sarah of Waxhaw, NC, Ryan Macrae and wife Candy of Greenwood, SC, Ty Nelson and wife Kelly of Graham, NC; his niece Gayle Guthrie and husband Tommy of Mount Pleasant, SC; and his nephew David Nichols and wife Carol. He was blessed with great grandchildren and great nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly.
To celebrate his life, the family will receive visitors from 5:30 p.m. till 7 p.m. on Friday, March 22nd at Munden Funeral Home in Morehead City, NC.
