Robert VanDyke, 56, passed away peacefully at his home in Beaufort, North Carolina on Thursday, September 12, 2024, following a courageous battle with ALS.
A funeral service to honor Robert’s life will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, September 22nd at Munden Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Robert was born on May 25, 1968, in Greenville, North Carolina to the late Zack VanDyke III and Patricia Murdoch. He graduated from D.H. Conley High School and went on to work for the US Postal Service in Beaufort and Morehead City for 32 years. He enjoyed his job and made many life-long friendships with customers along his route.
A skilled gardener, Robert loved working outdoors on his property then relaxing and watching the wildlife surrounding his home. He enjoyed cars, target shooting, games, music, good food and had recently become a fan of Bob Ross, even creating a few paintings of his own. He always looked forward to football season and the fellowship with friends on his fantasy football leagues. He was a fan of NASCAR, attending races in years past and even driving a car at Pocono Raceway following his diagnosis.
Robert had a quiet nature, a big heart and a great smile. He was a loyal friend and could always be counted on in a time of need. The bravery and strength he demonstrated throughout his journey with ALS were a testament to his faith in God and knowledge that he would stand tall again in the presence of his Lord and Savior. He will forever be missed by his family and friends.
Those remaining to cherish his memory are sisters, Lynn Elvington (Gil) of Carolina Shores, Amy Wells (Mike) of Hampstead; brother, Douglas Mills of Supply; and beloved aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to ALS United NC, 4 N. Blount Street #200, Raleigh, NC 27601.
Family and friends are welcome to submit online condolences.
