Richard "Dick" John Smith, 63, of Morehead City, left for his heavenly home Tuesday, January 24, surrounded by his family.
Dick was passionate about serving others. He was an active family man who, with the belief that the greatest leaders are those with servant hearts, led his family well. Dick and his wife were home school parents for 14 years, and he volunteered as a coach for both hockey and baseball leagues. He loved all sports and participated in many. He served his community as board president for the Carteret Pregnancy Counseling Center, and volunteer at the Faith and Victory Church Soup Kitchen and the East Coast Church Storehouse Food Pantry. Dick served his beloved country as an Air Force Sergeant during the Vietnam War. His assignments included 6927th Security Group in Okinawa, the 6924th Security Squadron in DaNang, and the 6993rd Security Squadron in San Antonio.
Dick was an employed by TRW as Senior Marketing Representative, Western Union as a Senior Communication Representative, and DHL as an Area Sales Manager. He and his wife shared a dream of moving to Carteret County, their vacation home for many years. They realized that dream in 1986 when they moved to Emerald Isle, NC, and then later to Morehead City, NC. Dick was employed at the Morehead City Port for 26 years, most recently as a General Superintendant of SSA Marine/SSA Cooper.
He is survived by his loving wife of 36 years Claudia Crane Smith of the home: daughter Laura Hannel and husband Rick of Morehead City, son John Washburne and wife Gaye of Atlanta, daughter Amy Smith Toms and husband Shaun of Morehead City, son Jeremy Smith of Morehead City, and son Joshua Smith of Morehead City: ten grandchildren Lindsay van Zyl and husband Bruce, Tyler Hannel and wife Nicole, Savannah Hannel, Cory Hannel, Hayley Hannel, John Washburne Jr., Michael Washburne, and Emma Beverly Toms: siblings Dr. Gerald "Bud" Smith and wife Joan, Kathy Unger, Dave Smith and wife Tina, Gerald Rothwell, Roy Crane and wife Patti: he was the “favorite” uncle of nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Gerald and Theresa Smith, a sister Jean Rothwell, a brother-in-law Lou Unger, and a nephew Paul Lewis Unger.
A service will be held 2:00 pm Saturday January 28, at Munden Funeral Home Chapel with Andre Webb and Pastor Nelson Hopkins officiating.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
