Richard "Dick" Gambill

Richard Kemp “Dick” Gambill, 83, of Morehead City, passed away Sunday, September 16, 2018 at Carrington Place Rehabilitation and Living Center in Matthews, North Carolina. He was in Matthews due to Hurricane Florence that hit the Crystal Coast.

His memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, September 26, 2018, First United Methodist Church in Morehead City, NC.

Richard was born March 18, 1935 in Evanston, IL to the late Charles R. Gambill and Isabel P. Kemp. He married Rose Daniels 1963. A retired Naval Officer, he served in the United States Navy from 1957 – 1983, serving in the Vietnam War. Richard retired as a Commander. He was a graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology and remained a yellow jacket fan until his passing.

Richard was very active in community service.  He volunteered for 14 years with Crystal Coast Habitat for Humanity, he served as a member of the Board of Directors and helped build houses. Richard, also, volunteered for seven years with the US Coast Guard Auxiliary serving as Radio and Communications Watchstander; four years with Outer Banks Wildlife Shelter; more than seven years with the Morehead City Planning Board; three years with Carteret County Board of Education (serving as a volunteer aide, math tutor and reading pal). Richard was a dedicated member of the First United Methodist Church, a member of the Outreach Committee and a member of the “Methodist Menders”, a group who provided minor repairs for members and disaster damage repairs for the community.

He is survived by his wife Rose Gambill of Morehead City; daughter Emily Bedsworth and spouse Christian Bedsworth and grandson Fisher of Pine Knoll Shores; sister Charlotte Hoyer of Houston, TX.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Isabel Gambill.

In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to a charity of one’s choice.
