Richard “Rick” John Weigel, 81, of Havelock, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on November 4, 2024, in the Comfort Care Wing of Carolina East Medical Center.
A memorial service to honor Rick’s life will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 22, 2025, at Liberty Church in Havelock, officiated by Pastor Blake Larson. The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. until 2 p.m., prior to the service.
Rick joined the Marine Corps at age 17 and proudly served his country for 25 years in a variety of assignments, including New Jersey, South Carolina, California, Hawaii, Virginia, Illinois, North Carolina and Japan, averaging 2 years at a place. A respected weather forecaster, he retired as a Master Gunnery Sergeant, (MGySgt). He enjoyed several reunions held every two years, the most recent last June in Montana.
Once retired, he went into business clearing land and building B&R Guns and Outdoor Range. As it grew, he gradually expanded its offerings to include sales of firearms and a multitude of accessories. He also organized a variety of competitive matches.
A kind, gentle man, he loved his adopted community and felt it important to contribute what he could. Because of this belief he was active in the Havelock High School Athletic Booster Club where he served as treasurer for many years, worked in the concession stand, and chaperoned the dances following the home football games. He also sponsored the Rifle Club.
Rick was an active member of Civitans, serving on multiple committees. He was a member of the Crimestoppers and was the Havelock representative on the Salvation Army Board for nearly 30 years, serving on multiple committees and a term as chairman.
Rick was a faithful member of Liberty Church, choosing to often serve behind the scenes and actively looked for ways to grow and bless the ministries of Liberty whenever he could.
Emily and the family would like to thank all the close and special friends who visited him faithfully daily. They would also like to recognize ECMC for their kindness, compassion and faithful care, including the silent salute.
Rick is survived by his cherished “child bride” of 50 years, Emily; his beloved prodigal son, Will and the love of his life Jade; and his brother, Bill and his wife Pat. His faithful buddy Jim waits and watches for his return daily.
He was preceded in death by his father, John; his mother, Hilda Zebell and her husband Cal; and his dearly loved beloved daughter, Kimberly Jean “KJ”.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Liberty Church Building Projects Fund or the Salvation Army of New Bern.
