Richard (Dick) Albert Lauffer, 86, retired professor, died peacefully onTuesday, November 27, 2012 at Carteret General Hospital in Morehead City, NC after a brief battle with cancer. Born on April 28, 1926 in Newark, NJ, Dick grew up in Passaic where he excelled in baseball and developed a love for all sports.
He received an undergraduate degree from Duke University, a Master’s degree from UNC Chapel Hill, and a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland. He spent 40 years as a coach, professor and administrator in physical education in high schools and universities throughout North Carolina and New Jersey, including Campbell University, East Carolina University and North Carolina State University.
He retired in 1988 from NC State where he is remembered for the construction of a new student activity center with its unique rock climbing wall. He enjoyed his retirement at the Crystal Coast.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Gibson Lauffer; son, Daniel Richard Lauffer and wife Maryann B. Crea of Durham; daughters, Lisa Carolyn Lauffer of Raleigh and Laura Denise Lauffer of Morehead City; three grandchildren, Elizabeth Lauffer, Jonathan Lauffer, and Sarah Lauffer of Durham; niece, Linda Lauffer of New York City; and sisters-in law, Louise Lauffer of Lake San Marcos, CA Vivian Dale Gibson of Swansboro, NC, Lou Gibson of Bel Air, MD, and many good friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gustav and Julia Lauffer and his brother, Col. Robert G. Lauffer, USMC (ret.).
According to his wishes, there will not be a funeral or memorial service. Those who wish to honor his memory may do so by contributing to his daughter’s endowment fund at the Medical Foundation of North Carolina or to a charity of their choice.
