Richard "Dick" Hoogendam, 88, of Carolina Pines, died peacefully with his family at his bedside on Wednesday, June 2, 2010, at his residence.
Born Sept. 29, 1921, in Philadelphia, he graduated high school in Wellsboro, PA, in 1940. Shortly afterward, he joined the Marine Corps, serving in the Marshall Islands, Guam and Okinawa, during World War II. After the war, he worked in civil service at Cherry Point for 30 years, retiring in 1976. After retiring from civil service, Dick worked for several years as a loan officer with Bank of North Carolina. He was a long-time member of First United Methodist Church in Havelock, singing in the choir and serving in the Men's Club and on countless committees. He was a 40-year member of the Havelock Lions Club, serving as secretary and treasurer. He was an avid golfer and a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He will be missed by his family and many friends.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm Monday at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Eldrick Davis and Rev. Eric Lindblade officiating. Interment will follow at Gethsemane Memorial Park, Morehead City.
He is survived by his wife of 66 1/2 years, Nell Hoogendam of the home; one son, Rick Hoogendam of San Diego, CA; one daughter, Sylvia Cochrane of Havelock, two grandchildren, Michele Buday and husband Ken of Carolina Pines and Heather Weiermann and husband Mark of San Diego, CA; one great grandchild, Savannah Buday, one brother, John Hoogendam and wife Myra of TX and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends 6:00 to 8:00 pm Sunday at Munden Funeral Home, Morehead City.
